In ham radio, an “Elmer” is the experienced operator who takes a newcomer under their wing — the one who answers the daft question without making you feel daft for asking. Ours is an AI advisor that already knows your callsign, your radio, your antenna, your log and what the ionosphere is doing right now, so you never have to explain your setup before you ask.

The difference is the context

Ask a general-purpose chatbot “what band should I try?” and it will describe how propagation works. Ask Elmer and you get an answer about tonight, from your QTH, on the antenna you actually own.

“What band should I try right now?”
Reads the live forecast for your grid square and your antenna — a wire at 20 ft and a beam at 60 ft get different answers, because they genuinely have different answers.
“Which states do I still need for Worked All States?”
Counts your actual log and names what’s missing. Same for DXCC, grid squares and POTA.
“Where is VK3ABC, and can I work them on 20?”
Looks up the licence, computes the bearing and distance server-side — never guessed — and checks that path against current conditions.
“I’ve only got a wire in a tree. Is 40 m realistic tonight?”
Answers for the antenna on file, at the height you gave it, rather than assuming a full-size dipole in the clear.

He can do things, not just talk

Elmer can write to your log and change your settings — but never on his own initiative and never silently.

What he will and won’t do

The most important thing about an assistant that gives radio advice is knowing when to stop talking.

Will

  • Read the live propagation forecast for your station and explain what it means
  • Count your log for award progress and name what’s missing
  • Compute bearing and distance to a callsign, server-side
  • Talk through antennas, feedline, band plans, licence-exam topics and operating practice
  • Log a contact or change a setting — after showing you and getting a yes
  • Quote a radio’s official manual, with the page number, when we hold it

Won’t

  • Guess at a menu path on your radio. If he doesn’t have the manual, the answer is “I don’t know how to do that on your radio”
  • Invent a number. Bearings, distances and award counts are computed, not recalled
  • Report “0 states worked” when he actually couldn’t read your log — a failure says so
  • Write anything to your log without showing you first
  • Key your radio. Elmer can suggest a frequency; you decide to go there

Why we made a point of this

A confident wrong answer about your radio isn’t a harmless glitch. A half-remembered menu path can put you outside your licence privileges, or transmitting where you shouldn’t be. So the rule isn’t a wish in a prompt — it’s built into what Elmer is allowed to see. Where we hold no sourced answer, there is nothing for him to work from, and the honest reply is the only reply available.

It means Elmer says “I don’t know” more often than a chatbot would. We think that’s the right trade.
